My aim in this post is to capture the current status of cheap laptops.
The reason for this is, I want to buy a loptop/device which allows me to read eBooks on my way to work.
What I need for this is a device which has a decent resolution (at least VGA) and is about 100$ (can be little more though) – but if it cost much more I’d better buy the books.
In December 2007 we had the delivery of the original 100$ laptop I am referring to in the title. If I could buy a laptop for 100$ I would be happy and not writing this post. So what is the problem?
The price of 100$ is only available for governments which take large volumes, not private persons.
In this post I will add from time to time the development in prices and products.
So lets start, what are our options?
| Title | |||||||
| price [$] | display size [''] | resolution [px] | weight [kg] | hd space [GB] | battery life [h] | processor, RAM | connectivity |
| Picture, Link, Comment | |||||||
| OLPC XO-1 aka 100$ Laptop | |||||||
| 250 (Sep 08), 400 (Dec 07) | 7.5 | 1200*900 | 1.4 | 1 | 40 | 700 MHz, 256 MB | WLAN, USB, SD, Audio |
There are two reasons why this great device drops out: It is still too expensive (also it is only available via eBay) and the hd is way to small. I think nowadays at least 4GB of flash should be possible. Despite these points I like the display resolution very much and the battery life time of 40 hours! |
|||||||
| Intel Classmate PC (First Generation) |
|||||||
| 425 (Sep 08) | 7 | 800*480 | 1.4 | 2 | 4 | 900 MHz, 256 MB | WLAN, USB, Audio |
Even more expensive than the OLPC, available via Amazon. The battery life time is bad and the resolution. Next one please. The third generation seems promising, but it is not out yet. No touchscreen. |
|||||||
| Asus Eee PC (Version 900 16G) |
|||||||
| 350 (Sep 08) | 8.9 | 1024*600 | 1 | 16 | 3.5 | 1.6 GHz, 1 GB | WLAN, USB, SD, Audio |
Wikipedia, Company, Amazon
There are loads of versions with different specs out there, for the specs I have chosen the cheapest which still meets the some requirements. The resolution is fine and for the large display the weight is nice. But it is too expansive and the battery life time is too short. No touchscreen. |
|||||||
| Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500 | |||||||
| 200 (Sep 08) | 8.4 | 800*600 | 1.1 | 15 | 3.5 | 500 MHz, 256 MB | USB, CF, Audio |
Company
Now this device looks really interesting. It is the cheapest (despite the double price I wanted to pay), the resolution and weight are fine, as well as the hd space. The battery life time is too short and it is missing WLAN. But I think the last two points are acceptable. |

For the moment (September 2008) there is no device which fullfills all criteria. Yet we get pretty close, the FSC Stylistic is in my opionion a good choice, although it could cost half of the price.
No 100$ laptop these days, sorry folks! Following Moore’s law we have to wait until end of 2009.
All interesting devices posted in the comments will be added to this comparison!
